Characteristics of Nitrogen Injection Fire Protection System

1. Low investment cost compared to other conventional systems, with retrofitting possible using existing openings.

2. Minimal maintenance and running costs.

3. Automatic and manual extinguishing system operable from the field and control room, unaffected by climatic changes.

4. Suitable for indoor/outdoor installation with minimal space requirements.

5. Multiple signals for activation eliminate false alarms. The system is fully automatic, unattended, and foolproof.

6. Operable manually/automatically and locally/remotely.

Operation of Nitrogen Injection Fire Protection System

Activating Signals and Action Sequence: When all activating signals are received, the system initiates a series of actions. It drains a predetermined volume of hot oil from the top of the tank through an outlet valve to reduce tank pressure.

Nitrogen Gas Injection: Simultaneously, high-pressure nitrogen gas is injected into the tank. The nitrogen gas stirs the oil at a pre-fixed rate, reducing the temperature of the top oil layer. The drained oil creates space within the tank, which is then occupied by the nitrogen, forming an insulating layer over the remaining oil, preventing fire exacerbation and providing additional safety.

Conservator Isolation Valve: The transformer conservator isolation valve blocks the flow of oil from the conservator tank during critical events like tank rupture, explosion, or bushing bursts.

Ingredients Used in Fire Extinguishers

The composition of nitrogen injection fire protection varies depending on the type of extinguisher and its intended use. Water extinguishers contain treated water, sometimes mixed with additives to enhance cooling and suppressive capabilities. Foam extinguishers utilize a mixture of water, foam concentrate, and air, creating a blanket that smothers the fire. Dry chemical extinguishers use powdered agents such as monoammonium phosphate or sodium bicarbonate, which interrupt chemical reactions in the fire. CO2 extinguishers contain carbon dioxide gas, which displaces oxygen and cools the fire without leaving residue. The choice of ingredients in nitrogen injection fire protection is critical for ensuring effectiveness and safety in fire suppression.

Application of Nitrogen Injection Fire Protection System

Nitrogen Fire Suppression System

Transformer Protection

Safeguards high-value transformers from internal arcing, dielectric breakdown, or bushing failures that can lead to catastrophic explosions and fires.

Explosion Prevention

Rapidly drains oil and injects nitrogen to reduce internal pressure and displace oxygen, preventing tank rupture.

Fire Extinguishing (Internal & External)

Creates an inert layer (lowering oxygen levels below combustion point) and cools the oil to extinguish fires, including those on the top cover or surrounding equipment.

Industrial Environments

Ideal for power substations, manufacturing plants, and mining operations where high-value equipment and significant fire risks exist.

FAQ

Q: What is the application of nitrogen in fire suppression system?

A: Nitrogen (N2) works by reducing the oxygen level in the space to where (typically below 15%) the fire will extinguish automatically. This is ideal for protecting electronics and machinery, such as air compressors.

Q: What is a nitrogen injection fire protection system?

A: Nitrogen injection fire protection system designed for oil filled transformers shall prevent tank explosion and the fire during internal faults resulting in an arc, where tank explosion will normally take few seconds after arc generation and also extinguish the external oil fires on transformer top cover due to tank ...

Q: What is nitrogen for fire protection?

A: NFPS works by introducing large amounts of nitrogen gas into an enclosed area, creating a fire-retardant atmosphere. This fire-resistant environment prevents flames from spreading and cooling the fuel surface, thus reducing the amount of oxygen available to sustain combustion.

Q: What is the most common fire protection system?

A: Water. A fire suppression system that relies on water is the most common type of fire suppression system, and most people choose to have them installed in businesses and buildings.

Q: What is the liquid nitrogen fire suppression system?

A: What is a nitrogen fire suppression system? A nitrogen fire suppression system replaces water or chemical agents with pure nitrogen gas as the extinguishing medium. Nitrogen gas suppresses fire by displacing oxygen, removing the elemnint combustion needs to continue.
